Marketing at Christmas Time

This is an interesting subject to cover. How are you going to market your business at Christmas time? It is the busiest time of the year for most small businesses. From Thanksgiving to Christmas there is so much opportunity for a small business to stand out. We are just going to cover a few different options. Hopefully this will jog your mind and get some creative juices flowing. Here are a few top tips for successful marketing at Christmas time.

Successful Marketing at Christmas Time

First let’s remember what marketing actually is. It is “The activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings.” According to this definition by the American Marketing Association we have four different phases we need to complete: creating demand, communicating the product, delivering the offer, and the exchange/purchase of the product.

In this post we are going to concentrate on the first two creating and communicating the products or services at Christmas time.

Why Christmas Time?

Christmas time is the perfect storm for marketing your business. You have people already in a buying mood and there is a great sense of community. From Thanksgiving on there are great days to take advantage of – Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, there are a great many opportunities for your business to be seen at Christmas. Where we are located in South Jersey it is very important to take advantage of the Christmas season. The economy along the Jersey Shore is very seasonal so Christmas Time offers a great big push before the slower winter months. I’m just going to toss out a bunch of Christmas marketing ideas off the top of my head.

Sponsor Community Events

There are a multitude of things going on at Christmas time to be involved in. You can sponsor an event or actually organize a food drive or gift drive etc.

  • Christmas Parade
  • Events with Santa
  • Create a community event
  • Get involved with church events

Make sure your Christmas Branding is Set

Try to have all your Christmas branding match everywhere! Across all social media and all your packaging. Have a nice mix of Christmas branding that goes great with your normal branding.

Focus on a Christmas Feeling

when selling a product or service at Christmas time you should be using all the emotions that are present at Christmas. Here is a short list of the ones I came up with quickly.

  • Love of Family
  • Sad to be missing Family
  • New Love/Couples
  • Regret
  • Envy/Jealousy (Keeping up with the Joneses)
  • Empathy for those Not as Fortunate

These are just a few I thought of right now I’m sure there’s more I have missed. But when you analyze your product and your target market you can hone in on the best feeling and emotion you want to play off of.

Don’t forget all Your Marketing Platforms

While Social Media is the shiny toy right now, don’t forget all the other places you can be visible. There are so many different options for you to consider.
